  • Research Scientist - UVA Center for Applied Biomechanics

    The University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA is seeking a Research Scientist – Experimentation. Duties of the position include managing experimental projects including designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on results; and assisting in the development of new research projects with a special emphasis on the use of 3-D motion capture and Electromyography (EMG) systems for data collection. Requires a Ph.D. in Kinesiology or Mechanical Engineering, and with a background in biomechanics or closely related field and a minimum of four years of experience (this may include graduate research experience) in 3-D motion capture tracking systems, biomechanics testing, instrumentation, mechanical design and the development of signal processing algorithms using Matlab.

    Experience must include the following:
    • Two years of demonstrated experience with impact biomechanics testing (e.g., sports, automotive), experimental protocol design, test procedure documentation, technical report preparation;
    • Two years of demonstrated experience in experimentation using crash test dummies and cadavers, including cadaver specimen preparation, instrumentation, testing, and dissection;
    • Two years of active participation in a multi-disciplinary research team comprised of senior support staff, graduate students, and other researchers in a dynamic testing environment;
    • Three years of direct and demonstrable experience with mechanical system design, including proficiency with computer aided design (CAD) software; and four years of demonstrable proficiency in high-quality technical writing;
    • Four years of direct and demonstrable experience with each of the following:
      • Set-up and operation of digital data acquisition systems (This must include at least two years of experience in the set-up and operation of DTS products such as SLICE, SLICE Pro and TDAS),
      • Set-up and operation of digital video imager systems (This must include at least two years of experience in the set-up and operation of Memrecam products such as the GX1 (or equivalent)),
      • Experience with Delsys (or equivalent) Electromyographic (EMG) systems including system set-up, testing and data post-processing,
      • Set-up and use of multi-degree-of-freedom robotic test devices in biomechanical testing applications, including the development and implementation of control algorithms and integration of the test device operation with peripheral test systems (e.g., Vicon),
      • Expertise with Vicon motion capture, including camera setup, operation, processing using predefined validated anatomical models, and the development of customized.
