The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for a general faculty Research Professor position, specializing in Military Programs, for the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) in the Mechanical & Aerospace Department. The incumbent will lead existing multi-faceted Department of Defense projects as well as cultivate new research opportunities for CAB.
The CAB is one of the largest university-based biomechanics laboratories in the world. It was founded in 1989 and has grown steadily since, with a current staff of 9 Principal Investigators from SEAS and the School of Medicine and approximately 50 researchers and support staff in a dedicated, state-of-the-art 35,000 ft2 facility with world-class computational, experimental, mechanical, and biological resources. SEAS at UVA enjoys a strong, dynamic research program within one of the best comprehensive universities in the world. UVA has made it a priority to encourage interdisciplinary research and the Research Professor will strategically position the Center’s military programs to benefit from new opportunities presented by UVA's $2.3 billion Strategic Investment Fund, which will provide transformational investments in the quality of UVA's research.
Candidates must possess a PhD in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field and be internationally recognized for research excellence in an area of injury development and mitigation in the area of very high-rate loadings common in military environments, and including the design of personal protective equipment and vehicle safety systems. The incumbent should have a proven record of extramural research funding and experience in managing such projects within the confines of an academic setting. Preference will be given to candidates that have a demonstrated record of collaborative relationships across engineering departments, with other universities, and with medical school researchers.
