POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS ARE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE AT THE MOTOR CONTROL AND NEURORECOVERY LAB

We invite applicants for two (2) postdoctoral research fellowship positions in the Motor Control and NeuroRecovery laboratory at the City University of New York department of Physical Therapy, under the direction of Dr. Maria Knikou. The overall goal of the lab is to develop noninvasive rehabilitation strategies based on neurophysiological evidence for people with Spinal Cord Injury. Funding for these positions has been secured for 3 years from a multi-year grant obtained from the New York State Department of Health, Wadsworth Center. Funding is secured for a new research project on the effectiveness of noninvasive thoracolumbar transspinal stimulation paired with transcortical stimulation to functionally reorganize cortical and spinal locomotor neuronal circuits in people with Spinal Cord Injury. This novel neuromodulation method will be delivered with subjects at rest and during functional motor tasks, such as walking with a robotic-assisted gait system (Lokomat). This project will delineate the physiological mechanisms underlying recovery of motor function after repetitive transspinal-transcortical paired associated stimulation.
The postdoctoral research fellows will be primarily responsible for the implementation, execution of the study, and further development of analytical software. The post doc research fellows will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory housing equipment necessary for electrophysiological data acquisition and analysis, as well as equipment for movement kinematics. Further, the fellows will work with other post-doctoral fellows and physical therapy students. It is expected that the fellows are involved in all aspects of the research project but also in other experiments, and will be encouraged to pursue additional research areas of interest.
Highly motivated candidates with particular interest in understanding pathological movement control, pathological neuronal circuits, and functional neuroplasticity in people with Spinal Cord Injury are encouraged to apply. Appropriate background includes a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field. Applicants from the field of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences are also encouraged to apply since rehabilitation scientists will be responsible for the clinical component of the research project. Experience in research with human subjects is highly desirable. Familiarity with Labview, Matlab and statistical analysis is also desirable.
