HJF is seeking a Biomedical Engineer to support research activities within the Department of Rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to the Department of Rehabilitation.
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is one of the nation’s largest and most renowned military medical centers and has recently been dubbed "The Nation's Medical Center". The Department of Rehabilitation is comprised of 4 clinical services: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Orthotics and Prosthetics. These services provide multidisciplinary rehabilitative care for Service Members and retirees. The Department also houses the Biomechanics Laboratory and the Virtual Environment Laboratory, which provide clinical and research services. The Biomechanics Lab has capabilities to capture human movement mechanics and the Virtual Environment Lab contains the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN).
Responsibilities:
- Interviews potential subjects for research protocols, validates eligibility to participate, and evaluates commitment
- Educates subjects about the research protocol, their roles in the protocols, and any other vital information. Serves as a resource for the subjects
- Responsible for conducting laboratory biomechanical research with devices such as force platforms, high speed cameras, instrumented treadmills, metabolic analysis units, and electromyography.
- Documentation of research activities, observations, data, and distribution of instrumentation/devices by using laboratory notebooks and appropriate electronic software.
- Collect, interpret, and analyze biomechanical data and video, using data acquisition, signal processing, and statistical techniques.
- Design, develop, and implement engineering and medical diagnostic and clinical instrumentation, equipment, and procedures, using the principles of engineering and biomedical sciences.
- Install, adjust, maintain, repair or provide technical support for instrumentation, engineering and video equipment, and biomedical equipment.
- Conduct training to educate the research team and other collaborating personnel on proper use of equipment.
- Write documents such as test plans, protocols, policies, standards of use, maintenance and repair of medical, research, and engineering equipment.
- Conduct preventative maintenance, calibration, and repair of equipment
- Participate in the preparation of abstracts for professional conferences, manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals, and development of research proposals
- Write letters and reports and update research protocols as needed
- Completes other projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Mechanical Engineering (biomechanics coursework or experience is desirable); experience coding in Matlab; knowledge and familiarity with military is desirable; human research training is desirable; experience with video capture (regular and high speed) and image/video processing and tracking; statistics and signal processing; programming and algorithm development.
Minimum Educational/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in biological or biomedical engineering; Masters preferred
Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 related years
Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; interaction with patients
Work Environment: The work environment is that of a motion analysis laboratory and virtual reality system located in a teaching and research hospital. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet. Work is also performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning.
