Faculty Background Details:
The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences operates within the Faculty of Science and Technology, on the Cambridge campus. It is a dynamic, successful and rapidly growing department. The Sport and Exercise Sciences course area offers three undergraduate degrees; Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Coaching and Physical Education, and Coaching for Performance in Football (distance learning). There is also a very popular extended (Level 3) degree entry point which progresses excellent students on the 1st year (Level 4) of the undergraduate programme. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Science course successfully recruited its first cohort in September 2015 and is an area for further expansion over the medium term. The course team has a strong research focus with staff publishing papers across all the major sub-disciplines. The Sport and Exercise Sciences Research Group is aiming to submit to the upcoming REF. Purpose built laboratories for teaching, research and consultancy will further enhance the standing of the newly established Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Contribute to the research activities of the Faculty, including through the production of internationally recognised research outputs.
2. Contribute to teaching and related activities in the Sport and Exercise Sciences undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, drawing on own area(s) of expertise.
3. Design and develop teaching material across a range of modules and courses in the subject(s), where appropriate, at both undergraduate and postgraduate/professional levels.
4. Act as academic tutor, providing advice, guidance and support to students.
5. Act as a module leader for modules with several groups, leading the module team and co-ordinating activities, resources and assessment.
6. Act as course leader where appropriate.
7. Contribute to planning and implementation of strategic areas such as student recruitment, marketing, quality assurance and student retention.
8. Work with colleagues to improve and enrich the experience of our students. Contribute to local plans in response to National Student Survey outcomes.
9. Take a pro-active role in the recruitment and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and undertake associated duties including preparation, marking and administration.
10. Contribute to curriculum development by identifying the need for review of current provision and designing and developing course proposals.
11. Work to achieve our vision and values in respect of widening participation, equality of opportunity, commitment to the health and safety of students and colleagues, and the delivery of high quality education provision.
12. Contribute to external income generation, including research, consultancy, and networking, and the identification and development of new market opportunities for the department through consultancy, knowledge transfer activities and research funding bids.
13. Contribute to assessment practices and procedures as required.
14. Liaise with external examiners, as required by the Head of Department.
15. Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with your grade.
With a PhD or Professional Doctorate (or nearing completion) in a related subject area, you’ll also have teaching experience in Higher Education. We welcome applications from candidates who can complement and support our department teaching and researching in one or more of the following areas: Biomechanics and Human movement analysis, Exercise science (Strength and Conditioning).
