We are seeking a PhD student to work on a multi-disciplinary project in Bio-Inspired Propulsion. The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics. The applicant should have excellent computational skills and experience in fluid dynamics. Experience in musculoskeletal biomechanics and / or robotics is also preferred. The project involves the detailed study of the fluid-structure interaction and biomechanics of an organism executing a rapid escape maneuver.
The PhD project is part of a larger multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional initiative on Bio-Inspired Propulsion. Our consortium consists of researchers encompassing the spectrum from basic to translational science; therefore, the candidate would have the opportunity to become immersed in a rich environment where she or he can interact with scientists and engineers spanning evolutionary biology, paleontology, fluid dynamics, biomechanics, and design and manufacturing.
Queen’s University is located in beautiful Kingston, Ontario, which sits on Lake Ontario at the foot of the Thousand Islands National Park. Kingston is located 35 minutes from the U.S. border, 1.5 hours from Ottawa, 2 hours from Toronto, and 3 hours from Montreal.
Please send a cover letter, CV, and a list of three references to Lindsay Gibson (Lindsay.Gibson@Queensu.Ca). We are hoping to fill the position this fall (Sept. 2017).
