An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate in Experimental Biomechanics within the integrated musculoskeletal biomechanics (IMSB) group of the INSIGNEO Institute for in silico Medicine and contributing to the activities of the newly established Sheffield NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Translational Neurosciences.
Translational Neuroscience is the discovery pathway that develops basic findings, related to neurological diseases, into new effective treatments. This pathway extends from research into underlying disease mechanisms, through the process of identifying key molecular changes leading to disease (target identification) and screening for drugs that correct the problem (lead compound identification), to testing of promising compounds in clinical trials.
Within this framework, the post-holder will contribute to develop and deploy ad-hoc experimental protocols for the identification of biomarkers for the quantification of a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal function and response to treatment in various neuro-degenerative diseases (Motor Neuron Disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and stroke). These protocols will be based on measurements selected among those coming from wearable sensors, stereophotogrammetric systems, isokinetic dynamometers, and electromyography.
The post holder would also collaborate with specialists in medical imaging and in silico medicine within the Insigneo institute to the development of subject-specific models, which can provide biomarkers that are difficult or impossible to measure experimentally.

The post holder is expected to work independently and with minimal supervision and to contribute to the activity of the research group with the supervision of junior team members.
The post is full time and available for four years.
The post-holder will report to Dr Claudia Mazzà and Professor Marco Viceconti, Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Sheffield. The post-holder would also join the Insigneo Institute and the IMSB team.

- a PhD in Engineering, Physics, or similar disciplines
- a strong expertise in measuring and modelling of human movement.
The post holder is expected to work independently and with minimal supervision and to contribute to the activity of the research group with the supervision of junior team members.

The post-holder will report to Dr Claudia Mazzà and Professor Marco Viceconti, Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Sheffield. The post-holder would also join the Insigneo Institute and the IMSB team.
