Transurban PhD Scholarship in Child Passenger Injury

    Supervisor: Professor Lynne Bilston
    Co-supervisor: Dr Julie Brown

    Background:

Injury is a leading cause of death and disability for children. Child passenger injuries are a substantial part of this problem. Despite advances in our understanding of the biomechanical differences between paediatric and adult tissues, and the production of new crash test dummies representing child occupants (Q-series), the existing injury criteria still have significant limitations in their ability to accurately predict paediatric injury.

    Aims:

The primary aim of this PhD program is to develop improved child injury criteria for assessing risk of serious injury for child occupants in car crashes, using current knowledge of paediatric biomechanics.

    Eligibility:

    1. A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or similar), with 1st class or 2nd class honours division 1 (or equivalent).
    2. Comply with all requirements for admission to the UNSW PhD program (https://research.unsw.edu.au/researc...egree-programs), including the English language requirements (https://www.unsw.edu.au/english-requirements-policy).

    Benefits:

This scholarship pays a tax-free stipend to cover living expenses at the Australian Government Research Training Program rate, currently $A26,682 p.a., plus a $A5,000 supplementary scholarship, making total scholarship value $A31,682p.a, for three years. International applicants will need to secure a UNSW Tuition Fee Scholarship also, to cover tuition fees for international students.
