The MGH Foot & AnkleResearch and Innovation Lab (FARIL) is a groundbreaking initiative by the MGHOrthopaedic Foot & Ankle (F&A) Service focused on pioneeringbreakthroughs in F&A research and innovation that will directly impact thecare of F&A patients. With significant capital support already secured, thefuture Director will lead this robust, well-funded lab in an entrepreneurial researchventure aspiring to change the face of F&A health, education, technology,and innovation nationwide—with the added benefit of being embedded within a leading,world-class academic institution. The Director will be responsible for allproject management services required to conduct clinical trials and otherinvestigational research in accordance with IRB, FDA, and industry regulations,as appropriate. Receiving generaldirection from the Chief of Foot & Ankle Surgery, the incumbent willprovide oversight of all scientific activities and research personnel,including PhD candidates, medical students, residents, fellows, and other investigators(currently numbering 5-10); the successful candidate will also collaborate withthe Chief and other department members to create and develop both a short andlong term strategic plan for MGH FARIL. This individual will help implement keystrategic initiatives within the Lab, including deployment of existing andfuture philanthropic support, intellectual property development, recruitment ofcutting edge research scientists, and organization of educational initiativessuch as internationally attended academic courses.
The incumbent will beexpected to draw on a broad understanding of clinical and research practices,and display a high degree of initiative and independent judgmentto continually assess and direct a wide range of issues, including researchoperations, talent recruitment, marketing, project development, national andinternational partnerships, and space management. In addition, the incumbentmust have the skill set to collaborate closely with principal investigators, hospital leadership, philanthropicsupporters, and other members of the interdisciplinary teamto carry out the day-to-day operations of FARIL. The successful candidate should also havedemonstrated experience in primary authorship of peer review publications, aswell as substantial interest in oral and written presentation of research dataon a local, regional, national, and international level. Ultimately, we intend toempower the successful candidate to become one of the world’s leaders inF&A research and innovation, both in the realm of academia andindustry.
The incumbentwill also be the primary compliance officer, responsible for obtainingregulatory approval at both the local and federal levels for the Division’sresearch endeavors. Additionally, he or she will act as the primary contact forresearch-related administrative needs and should have an express interest inacademic advancement towards full professorship on the research track atHarvard Medical School. The successfulcandidate will be hired at the Assistant Professor level at Harvard MedicalSchool, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
