A PhD opportunity has become available in the Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London (CBIS) (www.imperial.ac.uk/blast-injury) looking at blast injury of the cervical spine. The proposed project seeks to assess the unique mechanisms of spinal injury in mounted troops exposed to blast, based on the findings from CBIS research. It will be informed by development of a combined musculoskeletal and finite element spine model currently being developed by a PhD student in the Structural Biomechanics Group (www.imperial.ac.uk/structural-biomechanics). The spine will be modelled as a complete construct, with structural representations of the vertebra, spinal discs, ribs and skull, muscles and ligaments, and bulk continuum representations of organs. The project will build on the work of current and former PhD students from the Structural Biomechanics Group in terms of modelling bone fracture and disc injury. Dynamic analyses will be carried out, representing other body segments using masses, springs and dampers. The aim of the project is to assess and develop mitigation strategies.
Funding can be applied for to cover fees and a stipend for UK/EU students, with the stipend at the RCUK rate (http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/skills/training/).
