    The studentship provides a tax free stipend of £14,553 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used towards the cost of the International tuition fee in the first instance. The studentship is for three years full-time
    The Tennis Foundation celebrated its most successful Paralympic Games ever for players on its World Class Performance Programme after bringing home six medals from Rio last year. This studentship is an opportunity to provide applied biomechanical support to their players. The project will be based in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands (NCSEM-EM) building and will form part of the research activities of the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport (PHC).
    Key deliverables of the PhD programme of study include:
    • Collecting kinematic and kinetic performance data on a range of wheelchair tennis players;
    • Establishing the key technical principles of the tennis serve for wheelchair tennis players from both a performance and injury perspective;
    • And if avenues permit – exploring the chair ergonomics/ propulsion technique and technological developments to maximise on court athlete performance.
    The findings will help to inform guidelines on wheelchair tennis coaching and player development to improve performance and minimise injury risk. The study will also benefit from the Tennis Foundation facilities and access to wheelchair tennis players.
