Iowa State University seeks a dynamic and accomplished scholar to serve as Chair for the Department of Kinesiology. The Chair will be an innovative leader committed to academic excellence in research, student-centered learning and community engagement. The Chair will enhance and advance the strengths of the department through faculty and staff mentoring, fiscal and personnel management, and engagement with a wide range of stakeholders including academic collaborators, alumni, community, and industry partners. The Chair will be an effective communicator who will foster an environment that supports social justice, equity and inclusion throughout the department. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Human Sciences.
The Kinesiology department enrolls over 1200 students and houses the 3rd largest undergraduate program at ISU. Within the Kinesiology and Health major, options include pre-health professions, exercise science, community/public health, physical activity and health promotion, and physical education teacher education. An athletic training degree and a diet and exercise BS/MS degree are also offered. Departmental research areas of focus include biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, neuromotor control, physical activity epidemiology, and physical activity promotion, with over $1.8 million in external funding in 2016-17. The Department offers both an M.S. and a Ph.D. Extensive research facilities are available in the recent $5.3 million renovation of the Forker building, including a fully equipped exercise intervention space. Kinesiology faculty are engaged in collaborative research with colleagues in engineering, veterinary medicine, food science and human nutrition, textiles, child development and family studies, and psychology. The department is actively engaged with public schools, community wellness programs, fitness centers, medical centers, industry partners, and college athletics.

The College enrolls over 4,000 undergraduate and 600 graduate students across 4 departments and the School of Education. Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and the academic qualifications to hold the rank of Professor with tenure in the Kinesiology department. Preference will be given to candidates with an excellent national recognition in their area of study, including research as demonstrated by peer reviewed publications and grant funding; evidence of effective teaching and student mentoring; ability to engage with stakeholders; demonstrated experience in academic leadership; faculty and staff mentoring; fiscal and personnel management; demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion; and experiences in alumni and donor relations.
