Head of Department - Sport and Exercise Sciences / Professor of Sport and Exercise Sciences
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
University/Department
Manchester Metropolitan University has an established reputation for sport as a Higher Education Institution and an ambition to develop this further. We are in a unique position to achieve this vision given Manchester’s ambition for sport, and its reputation as a global sport city. A key strategic priority for Manchester City Council is the promotion of Manchester as a global ‘City of Sport’.
As a University, we already have a strong track record in the delivery of a comprehensive curriculum in sport, business, management and integrated health and care disciplines. In addition, our strong partnerships with leading Olympic, Paralympic and professional sport organisations, have contributed to the development of a prosperous portfolio in sport.
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is one of the UK’s largest providers of the highly qualified science and engineering graduates required by the national and regional economy. The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences is one of five academic departments in the Faculty and the ambition is to grow this Department in the next five years.
Role
You will help to shape and deliver our ambitious vision for sport-related education, research, and knowledge exchange. If you have a proven record of academic leadership and you share our drive to explore, create, invent and make the world take notice, this could be a career-defining move.
As well as playing a leading role in shaping and delivering our vision for our sports offering, you will also provide academic leadership. You will spearhead plans to grow the Department significantly, building on current expertise and growing an already well-respected global research reputation.
Much will hinge on your ability to lead and inspire staff through a period of change, working closely with the Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor to define a strategy that delivers.
This is a rotational role; after four years, we will review your progress and you will either continue leading the department forward or revert to a professorial role.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for candidates with an exemplary record of accomplishment in leadership in learning and teaching, people who can demonstrate excellence in research and enterprise and can readily contribute to the University’s increasing international networks.
Proven negotiation and relationship-building skills are vital, as well as fostering firm relationships with internal influencers and with your team, as you will be working closely with high-profile stakeholders. We are also looking for evidence that you can manage and enable change, and confidently control budgets.
Academically, you have an exemplary international research profile. You will know how to ensure high-quality research, attract funding and have proven you can provide academic leadership to ensure quality research assessment, inspiring and relevant programme development, and cutting-edge innovation in teaching and learning.
