The Neurobionics Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department / Robotics Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Michigan invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of wearable robotics, open immediately. Our approach is to understand the dynamic mechanical properties that underlie human locomotion (i.e. joint mechanical impedance), and use this information to develop a new class of wearable robotic technologies. The specific federally-funded projects include the development of perturbation mechanisms / analyses for estimating leg joint impedance, and the further development of variable-stiffness prosthetic technologies. Skills:Extensive experience and a passion for robotics, biomechanics, physics, neuroscience, abstract thinking, as well as a desire to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities.Candidates should have a doctorate in mechanical or biomedical engineering, robotics, or related discipline. In addition, expertise in all or some of the following fields is required:
Applicants will be expected to independently produce results, publish in high quality engineering journals, travel to national + international conferences, and be an active part of lab culture. Fellows will also be given time and mentorship to begin developing their own research, as they prepare to transition to faculty.
Dates:Position is open immediately, and evaluation of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

- Mechatronics, including development of refined physical prototypes that integrate sensing, actuation, and control
- Precision machine design, with compliant mechanisms is a plus
- Control theory and implementation in realtime embedded systems
- Programming in Matlab and Python, and experience with Linux-based microcomputers
- Biomechanics and knowledge of human locomotion
- Human subject testing, and the development of IRB protocols
- Proficient with linear systems / identification techniques is a plus
- Strong written and oral communication skills
