The Physical Therapy Education program at SUNY Upstate Medical University, an academic medical center, seeks an experienced and visionary leader to advance the program's mission within and across our state-supported institution due to the former chair's promotion to Dean of the College of Health Professions. The mission of the program is to promote excellence in education, scholarship, and service to inspire students and clinicians to be transformative physical therapy leaders. We are seeking a leader who recognizes the importance of values-based leadership and whose vision is consistent with emerging health care delivery. The candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to a shared governance model, exceptional faculty mentoring skills, creativity and enthusiasm to work with the ample resources of this SUNY campus. The program has a fixed class size of 40 students and is housed in a beautiful, new academic building that is also home to the nursing, radiation therapy and physician's assistant programs. Our graduates possess strong clinical skills and many go on to full-time residencies. Exceptional learning opportunities on campus and at more than 200 affiliated clinical sites are offered throughout the 3-year curriculum in the majority of the clinical courses to enhance the clinical skills and reasoning abilities of our students. Some examples include integrated practice exams with simulated patients at the end of the first and second years and integration of clinical patients in the majority of the clinical and elective courses taught by renowned national clinical faculty. The department provides an environment that fosters the development of focused, productive, and high-quality research programs for core faculty members and encourages students to engage in the discovery process. Opportunities for collaborative research are enhanced by Upstate's core research facilities. Additionally, to enhance both clinical and teaching options within the University, The Clinical Skills Center is home to one of the largest standardized patient facilities in the country and provides teaching and learning experiences to students and clinical faculty.
The 12 faculty are exceptionally self-motivated, engaged and committed professionals with a collective expertise and advanced credentials in 6 specialty areas. Three of these faculty have release time to conduct their individual research programs with the other faculty engaged in clinical research, practice and other scholarship.
Upstate Medical University is an academic medical center with 1200 students in 4 colleges; medicine, nursing, basic science and health professions. As the largest employer in the Upstate region, we have a Level-1 trauma center, a 900 bed and dedicated children's hospital, and 77 unique specialty clinics. We are located in Syracuse's dynamic "University Hill" neighborhood, home to Syracuse University. According to a recent edition of the Places Rated Almanac, Syracuse is noted for affordable housing, excellent public education, a wide variety of cultural offerings and proximity to the Finger Lakes, Catskills and Adirondacks. Responsibilities. The Chair of the PT Program is responsible for all aspects of academic leadership and administration within the program. These include strategic direction, mentorship and faculty development, budgeting and fiscal management, curriculum development, oversight and evaluation, and development of new initiatives. The Chair also has responsibilities in teaching and scholarly activities. The position is a full-time 12-month tenure-eligible position at the rank of Associate/Full Professor. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will possess:
" An earned academic doctorate (e.g. PhD, Ed.D, DSc)
" Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor
" License or eligibility to practice as a physical therapist in New York State
" Minimum of 6 years of academic experience, including positions of increasing administrative responsibility
" Established record of excellence in teaching
" Established record of research/scholarly activity
" Established record of inclusive recruitment of students and/or faculty
