Applications are now being accepted for one position within the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Pediatric Mobility offered jointly through Children’s Specialized Hospital and Kessler Foundation. The position is located in northern New Jersey, USA, and will involve work at research and clinical sites in West Orange, NJ, Mountainside, NJ, and New Brunswick, NJ. The two-year program prepares biomedical scientists, including engineers (e.g. biomedical, mechanical, rehabilitation), biomechanists, kinesiologists, and those in related fields, for a career in rehabilitation research. All fellows participate in an extensive training curriculum and didactic offerings.
The fellow will work collaboratively with the principal investigator Dr. Barrance, clinical staff, and biomedical engineering staff, in the advancement of two lines of research as described below. Applicants with specific interests and/or experience related to these areas are therefore highly encouraged to apply.
* Treadmill-based gait retraining using wearable movement biofeedback systems
The fellow will play a lead role in execution, data analysis, and dissemination of ongoing research on a wearable biofeedback system that seeks to retrain a specific gait deficit in pediatric hemiplegic cerebral palsy.
* Kinematics and kinetics of manual wheelchair propulsion
The fellow will work with the team to advance studies in pediatric manual wheelchair propulsion that combine multimodal sensing technologies. Current areas of interest include the development of sensor based movement training modalities.
Qualifying candidates must have an earned doctorate in engineering (e.g. biomedical, mechanical), biomechanics, kinesiology, or a related field. Strong candidates will have prior experience in performing research studies in human subjects, graduate level training in biomechanics / engineering mechanics, as well as some history of publication and presentation of original research. Additional desirable skills and experience include: the ability to independently develop processing methods for data analysis (using for example Matlab or Labview), experience with motion analysis systems, knowledge of statistical data analysis, and excellent written communication skills.
