  • Biomedical Engineer - VISN 2 Gait and Motion Lab, New York, NY

    The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Biomedical Engineer to support the VISN 2 Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, located at the Department of Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

    The successful Biomedical Engineer will be involved in an exciting prosthetics-based research project.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct research under the direction of the Director of the Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory.
    • Interview potential subjects for research protocols, validate eligibility to participate, and evaluate commitment.
    • Educate subjects about the research protocol, their roles in the protocols, and any other vital intonation. Serves as a resource for the subjects.
    • Responsible for conducting laboratory biomechanical research with devices such as force platforms, high speed cameras, instrumented treadmills, metabolic analysis units, and electromyography.
    • Documentation of research activities, observations, data, and distribution of instrumentation/devices by using laboratory notebooks and appropriate electronic software.
    • Collect, interpret, and analyze biomechanical data and video, using data acquisition, signal processing, and statistical techniques.
    • Design, develop, and implement engineering and medical diagnostic and clinical instrumentation, equipment, and procedures, using the principles of engineering and biomedical sciences.
    • Install, adjust, maintain, repair or provide technical support for instrumentation, engineering and video equipment, and biomedical equipment.
    • Conduct training to educate the research team and other collaborating personnel on proper use of equipment.
    • Write documents such as test plans, protocols, policies, standards of use, maintenance, and repair of medical, research, and engineering equipment.
    • Conduct preventative maintenance, calibration, and repair of equipment.
    • Participate in the preparation of abstracts for professional conferences, manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals, and development of research proposals.
    • Wait and maintain laboratory IRB protocols.
    • Complete other projects as assigned.



    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience biomedical/mechanical engineering or other biomechanics/movement science related field, as well as knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of biomechanics; research experience in a gait and motion lab is preferred; experience coding in Matlab and using Visual3D; knowledge and familiarity with Veterans and Service Members is desirable; human research training is desirable; statistics and signal processing; programming and algorithm development.

    Minimum Educational/Training Requirements: Post-doctoral candidates preferred or Masters.

    Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 related years of experience.

    Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; interaction with patients

    Administrative: Must be adaptable to unexpected changes and possess strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills. Self-starter with willingness to make decisions independently and solve problems creatively within job scope.

    General: Ability to handle confidential/sensitive information and exercise good professional judgment, as well as uphold the VA Core Values and be a strong ambassador for the agency.

    Work Environment: The work environment is that of a motion analysis laboratory located in a teaching and research hospital. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet. Work is also performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning.
