  • PhD Assistantship in Wearable Technology

    Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD with Dr. Reed Ferber, Director of the Running Injury Clinic in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Last year, with the launch of the Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering (BME) Research Strategy, the Vice President (Research) announced a funding initiative to jump start BIG initiatives. These research initiatives involve ambitious interdisciplinary ideas, with far reaching potential and impact. We are pleased that our idea, ‘Sensor Technology in Monitoring Movement (STiMM) Program’ was selected.

    We are seeking a doctoral-level graduate student to engage in high-quality research and join a dynamic research team across several disciplines and faculties on campus (Bioengineering, Science, Medicine, Nursing, Engineering). We expect the applicant to be of the highest caliber with a track record that would be competitive for national and international fellowships. Experience with 3D accelerometry and inertial measurement units is critical, as the successful candidate will work with data from different wearable technologies for the purpose of injury prevention and prediction as well as improvement in athletic performance. Someone who has expertise in Machine Learning or other advanced mathematical methods (e.g., Fractal Scaling Analysis, Neural Network, PCA) and approaches to pattern recognition and identification of complex associations among biomechanical variables would be a significant asset.

    Research will be carried out in the Running Injury Clinic (RIC), which is located within the world-renowned Human Performance Laboratory; one of the largest and best equipped research centers in the world. The RIC and HPL have state-of-the-art equipment including multiple wearable technology devices and platforms, motion capture systems, force plates and instrumented treadmills, clinical assessment tools, and excellent computing facilities. The RIC research lab is well funded through various government and research foundation grants as well as philanthropic charitable donations. In addition, RIC has a strong history of research and development for the purpose of commercialization and knowledge translation.

    A Master’s degree in biomechanics, engineering, bioengineering, kinesiology, or closely related field is required. The preferred starting date is September 2018.
