    JOB TITLE
    Title: Physical Therapist

    Organization: The Narrows Institute for Biomedical Research and Education to Support VA VISN 2 Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service.

    Location: VA VISN 2 Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory at Veterans Affairs, New York Harbor Healthcare System, NY Campus, 423 East 23rd Street, New York, NY 10010.

    JOB SUMMARY
    The Narrows Institute for Biomedical Research and Education is seeking a Physical Therapist to support VA VISN 2 Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, located at Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System, New York Campus. Both part-time and full-time applicants will be considered based on candidate availability. The Physical Therapist will be primarily involved in a newly funded lower limb, prosthetics-based research project. She/he will play an integral role in the conduct of studies to evaluate and improve physical performance in individuals with lower limb amputation using different techniques, such as: computerized motion analysis and physical performance measures. Additionally, the Physical Therapist will be involved with several other ongoing and planned projects.

    CLASSIFICATION
    This is a term-position. Both Full-Time and Part-Time candidates will be considered. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

    PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Function under the direction of the Director of the Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory.
    • Coordinate efforts with multidisciplinary team to implement novel assessment and treatment protocols.
    • Recruit, screen, evaluate, and enroll potential patients for inclusion in IRB approved protocols.
    • Plan, monitor, and progress patients through treatment.
    • Modify treatment as required and consult with investigators regarding study planning.
    • Coordinate activities with the team to include the completion of all research and clinical documentation in accordance with JCAHO, IRB, and facility standards.
    • Assist in patient preparation for motion analysis, as well as collect and analyze biomechanical data, physical performance measures, and questionnaires.
    • Manage multiple projects, studies, and clinical visits simultaneously.
    • Keep up-to-date on new physical therapy techniques and implementation.
    • Assist in summarizing and distributing study results through conference and manuscript submissions.
    • Participate in clinical gait analysis sessions, including marker and electrode placement.
    • Produce written evaluations and have the ability to verbally communicate findings and recommendations for physicians and other allied health professionals.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:
    Technical Qualifications:
    • Master of Physical Therapy or Doctor of Physical Therapy, but candidates with experience as a Physical Therapist and a strong desire to contribute to research may apply.
    • Thorough knowledge of physical therapy techniques, materials, and equipment for evaluation and treatment interventions for individuals with amputation and other mobility disorders.
    • A moderately complex foundation of knowledge in neurophysiology, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, neuromusculoskeletal assessment, and interpretations.
    • State licensure in Physical Therapy and must be able to obtain and maintain clinical credentials.
    • Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support, or obtain certification prior to hiring.
    • Must be a problem-solver, have excellent critical thinking ability, and great interpersonal skills.
    • Experience in a motion analysis or biomechanics laboratory is highly desired.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite of software.

    Administrative
    • Must be adaptable to unexpected changes and possess strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills.
    • Self-starter with willingness to make decisions independently and solve problems creatively within job scope.
    • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects simultaneously while working under occasionally stressful conditions.

    General
    • Ability to handle confidential/sensitive information and exercise good professional judgment.
    • Uphold the VA Core Values and be a strong ambassador for the agency.
    • Will be aware of existing and potential hazards in handling equipment and instruments, and exercises appropriate precaution in minimizing any hazards.
    • Will adhere to safe laboratory practices for working in bio-safety environments.
    • This position may require physical exertion, such as regular and recurring bending, walking, running, climbing stairs, climbing ramps, or climbing ladders, to observe, collect or record data in the lab or other facilities. All these activities are expected be performed in a safe and controlled manner.
