Research Engineer Position - Shoulder Biomechanics research

The Biomechanics Department at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, New York ( is looking for an engineer to work in a competitive research laboratory. The position of Research Engineer involves design and implementation of biomechanical experiments in collaboration with scientists, biomechanical engineers, and orthopaedic surgeons in the areas of arthroplasty, joint mechanics, and musculoskeletal modelling.

The position requires the ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary research team. They must manage all aspects of experimental projects, including: study design and setup, data collection, manuscript and report writing, maintaining laboratory and testing equipment and facilities, and perform data and basic statistical analyses.

Candidates must have a minimum degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent), but a Master of Science degree in Biomechanics or a related discipline is preferable. The Research Engineer will work primarily in upper extremity musculoskeletal modeling, Finite Element Analysis methods and experimental cadaveric studies in the area of shoulder joint replacement and soft tissue balancing. Experience in MATLAB code development is required; previous experience in Biomechanical modelling and/or Finite Element Analysis is also favorable. Additional experience in LabView, Python coding, Mimics (or other imaging 3D reconstruction software) will also be preferred.

Interested candidates should send their curriculum vitae (CV) to Andreas Kontaxis (
