The Schulich School of Engineering and the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary are pleased to invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Biomedical Engineering.
Biomedical Engineering is a priority at the University of Calgary, involving more than 200 faculty members across six faculties, with current annual research funding exceeding $75M. The university has made significant investments in Biomedical Engineering to date, including the allocation of six Tier 1 and nine Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs. “Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering” is one of six strategic research priorities of the University of Calgary. A strong culture of collaboration and cross-disciplinary research excellence is enabled by significant research infrastructure located in multiple centers across campus. The university operates an established multi-faculty Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program with a strong focus on student success. The Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education (CBRE) offers an undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Specialization in conjunction with six engineering majors in the Schulich School of Engineering. In addition to preparing and delivering a range of biomedical engineering courses, including Biomaterials, Anatomy & Physiology for Engineers, and Fundamentals of Biomedical Device Development, the CBRE promotes and facilitates research experiences for undergraduates within the Schulich School of Engineering.
The primary research focus of the candidate should be related to applied Musculoskeletal Mechanobiology, Biomaterials and/or Biomechanics. Research specialties at a variety of scales are of interest, including molecular/cellular, tissue/joint, and system. At the molecular and cellular level, possible areas include biomaterials, stem cells, matrix biology, cytoskeleton, motility, or motor proteins, including mechanical interactions within a cell and between cell and substrate. At the tissue and joint level, possible areas include mechanical function, adaptation, and repair of cartilage, tendon, ligament, bone or muscle. At the system level, areas of interest include multiscale studies that bridge between mechanics, biology, and function. Successful candidates will have a research background in biomedical engineering or related field, and use any combination of experimental, theoretical, computational or other approaches. The position offers widespread opportunities to perform collaborative, integrated research that can be applied to better understand, prevent and/or treat injury and disease, including those associated with age, nutrition, and sport.
The successful applicant will be recruited through the Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education in the Schulich School of Engineering. They will hold a joint appointment in the Schulich School of Engineering (CBRE) and the Faculty of Kinesiology. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or related discipline, and possess a strong research track record. They must show evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at a university level, and have strong oral and written English communication skills. All program instruction is in English. In alignment with the University of Calgary's Eyes High strategic vision, and in support of its strategic academic and research priorities of leadership, teaching and research integration, and creating a dynamic environment to promote research excellence, the successful applicant will actively contribute to research, teaching and curriculum development, and student/postdoc supervision. The successful applicant will be expected to establish and lead an externally funded research program, teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in professional and university service. In time, it is expected that the successful applicant will grow into a leadership role within the CBRE and the institution. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package will be provided.
