    The research project

    This multi-institution collaborative research project has been funded by MTPConnect, and involves work on “Development of a 3D printed graft for surgical repair of the scapholunate interosseous wrist ligament (SLIL)”. The project aims to further develop and produce both a generic and personalized SLIL suitable for human clinical trials. The project involves collaboration with industrial designers, mechanical and biomedical engineers, biomedical scientists, and orthopaedic surgeons. The project has scope for PhD student(s) to focus on 3D printing experiments, 3D printing design development, robotic assessment of graft mechanical properties, and biologic and mechanical assessment of the graft.
    PhD candidate profile

    A successful candidate is expected to hold a bachelor’s degree with Australian-equivalent of first-class honours or a master’s degree by research that received high marks. These degrees should incorporate a significant research component (i.e., >33% of the total degree credits should be attributed to the research thesis component of the degree) in either mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, biomedical and biological sciences, medicine, industrial design, biomechanics, or related degrees. We need the student(s) to commence their candidature in September-October 2018.

    Scholarship

    If successful in securing either an Australian or University funded scholarship, the award will provide living allowances and tuition fees for international students for 3-3.5 years. There are comparable scholarships and awards available to domestic students. Please note that we will consider applications from individuals who have secured research funding from sources other than Australian government or Universities. However, the funding may not be sufficient to support a full 3-4 year PhD project, and as such externally funded PhDs will be scrutinized closely.

    Research setting and facilities

    • A state-of-the-art motion capture laboratories, which include the following equipment: 12-Camera Vicon MX systems, 4 AMTI force plates, 1 Bertec split belt instrumented treadmill, 16-channel Zero Wire EMG system, 16-channel wireless Noraxon EMG system, 16-channel wireless Noraxon IMU system, 1 Noraxon capacitive treadmill, and Medilogic pressure insoles.
    • Imaging laboratories (pQCT, DEXA, 3D and acoustoelastography ultrasound systems).
    • Motion capture, medical image processing, computational modelling and mechanical design software, including Matlab, Materialise Innovation Suite (Mimics, 3Matic) OpenSim, Vicon Nexus, Noraxon MR3, CMISS, ANSYS, and Solidworks.
    • High-performance computer clusters and medical image processing workstations.
    • Cell and molecular biology laboratories with imaging and mechanical testing facilities, including 6DOF robotic test machine.
    • 3D Printing including multi-polymer (including polyamide, polyether block amide, medical grade PCL and PLA), multi-metal (including titanium, stainless steel, cobalt-chrome) and biologics.


    We are a large research group, including senior professorial staff, post-doctoral research fellows, and PhD students. Our approach is to work collaboratively, but with a keen focus on research excellence.
