Penn State’s Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks to hire multiple full-time biomedical engineering (BME) tenure-track or tenured faculty members during 2019 and 2020 at the levels of Assistant, Associate, and/or full Professor. Such prospective faculty would help the department continue to develop an interdisciplinary cluster in biomedical health science and technology. The department has grown rapidly over the past several years, in which the number of faculty has more than doubled. Along with this expansion, a new building is under construction and will be ready in 2019. This growth reflects a multi-year commitment to growing our intellectual footprint in order to teach and perform research at the highest levels.
These primary BME faculty positions will include possible joint appointments in the Colleges of Medicine and Eberly College of Science, the Materials Research Institute, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, the Penn State Cancer Institute, and the Institute for Cyber Science. Applications from researchers representing a wide array of biomedical engineering/bioengineering research areas are welcomed, and we are particularly interested in candidates with an accomplished track record in:
Biomechanics and Multi-Scale Modeling: Including vascular remodeling, tissue use and repair, body or joint systems, mechanobiology, and multiscale characterization, including but not limited to cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, cancer, or other pathophysiology applications.
Biomedical Imaging: Including systems, cellular and molecular imaging with emphasis on MRI, photoacoustic imaging, ultrasound-mediated drug delivery, super-resolution microscopy, and incorporating computational methods and biomaterials.
Biomanufacturing and Biosynthesis: Including the biomanufacturing of clinically applicable cells and tissues from stem cells, the synthesis of biomolecules for applications such as biomanufacturing, drug delivery, manipulation or probing of biological processes, as well as biomimetic synthesis of micro and nanoscale materials for the (re)generation of cell, tissue or organ mimics.
Immuno-Engineering: Including adaptation of biomaterials, engineered tissues, synthetic biology, engineered chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) expressing immune cells and delivery systems for immuno-engineered therapies of disease model systems, such as cancer, inflammation, obesity, allergies, auto immune diseases, neuro-immune disorders, and control of the immunological environment of regenerative medicine.
Precision Health: Including precision and personalized approaches in various disease models and regenerative medicine; advancement of data science and predictive computational analyses, such as data integration and network development; electronic health recording mining; artificial intelligence; systems biology; and multiscale tissue modeling.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in BME or related field(s). Candidates also would be expected to secure (or for Associate and Full Professor ranks, have an outstanding track record of) extramural funding, be effective educators in the application of engineering to the medical and life sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate in service to further the missions of the department, college, and University.
