    Project Overview
    The Solid Mechanics Laboratory in the Division of Applied Mechanics within OSEL has a research opportunity for a Post Doctorate or advanced Masters (MS with experience) in the area of mechanical/biomechanical/biomaterials engineering with experience in computational modeling and applied mechanics. We are initiating a project to characterize the performance of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) devices at FDA Federal Research Center in White Oak. The selected candidate will be accomplished at translating real world data into a representative computational model. Motion capture data of the human shoulder combined with the wear data from explanted rTSA devices will be used to characterize the performance of rTSA devices. These data will then be used to develop a validated finite element model to study and predict the wear patterns within rTSA devices. Duties will include review of scientific literature, data analysis, building and running a finite element model, and close collaboration with those conducting physical experiments.

    Laboratory Overview:
    The Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) is the research laboratory of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). OSEL develops reliable standardized test methods for CDRH and industry use, performs anticipatory scientific investigations on emerging technologies, contributes laboratory data to national and international standards used in CDRH decision making, provides scientific and technical training for CDRH staff members, and maintains laboratory collaborations and relationships with scientific researchers in academia and other Federal laboratories.

    Key Qualifications:
    • Doctorate or Masters graduate with experience in computational modeling.
    • Preferred mechanical, biomechanical or biomaterials engineering program with a strong emphasis in mechanics/biomechanics and biomaterials.
    • Experience with FEA is mandatory.
    • Experience with Abaqus or ANSYS software is preferred
    • Experience with dynamic analysis, contact, friction, wear, and damage is preferred.
    • Detail oriented, independent worker with excellent oral and written communication skills required.
