The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Responsibilities
As an Instructor/ Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering you will responsible for teaching undergraduate mechanical engineering or engineering mechanics courses and advising student design and research projects in the Academy's ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program. The ability to do research in support of externally funded projects within the discipline is essential. Duties may include teaching and research in robotics, automotive engineering, bio-mechanics or various other mechatronic topics, writing that leads to publication, mechanical engineering lab support, and advising cadet capstone design and independent research projects. Superior communication skills and dedication to excellence in teaching are absolute requirements of this position.
Travel Required
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel up to 10% of the time for this position.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service starting on or about 01 JAN 2019 and not to exceed 13 months. This appointment is renewable. Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): 1) Academic Accomplishment (an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Bio-mechanical Engineering, or Automotive Engineering strongly preferred); 2) Mechatronics, Bio-mechanics, or Automotive Systems related academic or industry experience; 3) Demonstrated ability to teach mechanical engineering courses at the undergraduate level; 4)Demonstration of research or scholarship through publications or technical reports within the field of expertise; and 5) Demonstrated ability to mentor cadets.
