    Research Engineer

    The Rehabilitation Research & Development (RR&D) Center for Limb Loss and MoBility (CLiMB) at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA has an opening for a research engineer. The successful candidate will be involved in numerous projects related to the biomechanics of the foot and ankle, but will have room to expand his or her involvement into other research areas related to the Center’s overall mission. The main responsibilities are: 1) to maintain and continue to develop the hardware and software of our custom biplane fluoroscope for use in several lower limb projects, 2) to maintain, develop and conduct cadaver experiments with our robotic gait simulator, 3) to conduct and supervise experiments quantifying the mechanical properties of soft tissues, especially as it pertains to the effect of diabetes on tissue properties, using both ultrasound and materials testing machines, 4) to further develop our patient-specific computational modeling efforts, and 5) to develop in-house software for imaging-based studies on bone morphology and bone-to-bone positioning.

    Preferred technical competencies include the following: 1) experience (and a level of comfort) with cadaveric specimens, 2) knowledge of motion analysis data acquisition and processing (biplane experience would be a plus), 3) calibration and routine maintenance of instrumentation (force plates, pressure plates, load cells, motion capture, etc.), 4) familiarity with LabView and Matlab, 5) experience with controls, robotics, electronics and mechatronics, 6) familiarity with mechanical design and fabrication/machining techniques, 7) knowledge of imaging modalities (CT, MRI and especially, ultrasound), and 8) previous work with finite element software and OpenSim. Furthermore, strong oral and written communication skills are necessary as the successful candidate will be authoring articles and conference proceedings. This position will also involve supervision of undergraduate researchers, medical students, and to some extent, graduate students.

    This position requires several years of experience in an engineering field with a Masters (preferred) or Bachelors degree, as well as the knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of biomechanics.
