About the Program
The Athletic Training Program (ATP) at Washington State University is an intensive educational experience preparing graduates for certification by the Board of Certification. We use a combination of didactic course work combined with a wide variety of clinical education opportunities to prepare students for a wide variety of job options. The procedure for admittance into the ATP is a competitive process and acceptance allows students to certify into an undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine, which then transitions them into the Master’s in Athletic Training degree. On average, interviews are granted to 40-50 students each spring, with 18-25 students formally admitted each fall. Three years of clinical experience is provided to our students, with both on-campus and off-campus placements. Currently we have a total of 59 students within the AT program. We work closely with Washington State University Athletics which participates in the Pac-12 conference, a variety of local high schools, physical therapy offices, University of Idaho, Lewis and Clark State College, as well as the on-campus Health and Wellness center and other area physicians. The transition to the 5-year program had final approval through the regional accreditor for WSU in 2018. This 5-year program will allow us to keep many of the core ideas from the previous undergraduate program, and expand the curriculum and clinical experience to meet or exceed CAATE requirements.
