Facility: RIHOF, a division of University Orthopedics and a partner with the Bioengineering Laboratory, Department of Orthopaedics, Brown Medical School and Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI USA
Position and Facility Overview: The Director oversees biomechanical testing and research services. These services support commercial clients and research within the Department of Orthopaedics. Clients span across numerous sub-specialties within orthopedics and sports equipment safety and are supported through the development of comprehensive scientific methodologies and protocols. The facility staff apply engineering and scientific principles to assist clients’ needs typically throughout the entire idea/device life cycle. In collaboration with the Bioengineering Laboratory, facility staff assist with biomechanical research project from experimental design, to execution and publication of the findings.

Provides management direction and mentorship. Supervises highly qualified technical staff and temporary staffing as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and execute biomechanical research and development projects related to medical devices in support of commercial clients
- Manage and execute biomechanical research in collaboration with the Bioengineering Laboratory, working directly with students, residents and physicians
- Strategically market the facility’s technical capabilities to clients and the scientific community
- Develop additional expertise, gain additional industry exposure, and establish new and expanded client base through our unique technical consulting services
- Attract and develop new projects and clients in both the industry and academic sectors

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- B.S or M.S. in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field
- Direct experience in an applied R&D environment in medical devices with experience managing ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, quality system, and procedures is required
- Hands on experience with experimental preclinical device evaluation (cadaveric and benchtop) and test method development
- Hands on experience with material test systems and motion tracking systems
- Minimum of five years of professional experience
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate highly technical issues to a non-technical audience while possessing the technical depth to collaborate with physicians/engineering staff and interact with regulatory bodies
- Demonstrated capabilities in the areas of analytical, computational, and experimental biomechanics
- Experience establishing client relationships and a thriving consulting business is highly desirable
- Must be able to attract projects and continuously expand his/her business volume to support full-time staff and have the skills needed to manage, develop, and promote a group of professionals
- A record of peer-reviewed publications is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will also be expected to continuously expand his/her own expertise through further peer-reviewed publications and to develop the careers of support staff
