    Chapman University’s Department of Physical Therapy seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position in the Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. Preference will be given to candidates who can begin August 1, 2019.

    Continually accredited since 1928, the Department of Physical Therapy has a rich tradition as the oldest, and one of the longest continually accredited physical therapy programs in the United States. The program is located on the Rinker Health Science campus, Irvine, CA. The campus is home to several accredited graduate health science professional programs, including DPT, Pharmacy, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Physician Assistant. The Rinker campus also houses the Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences (The Brain Institute). The campus is distinguished by innovative teaching, learning, and research laboratories and classrooms with an emphasis on inter-professional education, evidence-based practice, and health promotion and injury/disease prevention. The Rinker campus is strategically located near numerous health service, medical device, and biopharmaceutical companies.

    The successful candidate will be a physical therapist (licensed or eligible for licensure in California), and hold a terminal academic doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant area of expertise.

    Post-doctoral fellowship preferred, as is a record of scholarship (peer-reviewed publications, national presentations, grant funding); teaching in area of expertise including, (but not exclusive to) human anatomy, acute care, cardiopulmonary, geriatrics, etc.

    Preference will also be given to candidates whose research agenda can contribute to the emerging strength of the DPT program in Human Movement System, and whose research agenda can potentially use any of the currently existing research instrumentation which include: 10-16 Camera Motion Analysis System, Codamotion, Ospry Motion Capture, Motek/GRAIL System (180 degrees Virtual Reality Projection Screen, 6-degrees of motion instrumented treadmill, with Full Body Weight Support System), other high-speed multi-camera/sensor systems; Noraxon® wireless EMG systems; Delsys® wireless EMG systems with accelerometers; Inertial Sensors; instrumented force plates and treadmills; 64 Channels mobile BrainVision® EEG system; Alter G treadmill, Biodex System 4 Pro Dynamometer, Hocoma ArmeoSpring® upper extremity exoskeleton, Neurocom® Balance System, GE Ultrasound, etc.

    To be considered at the Associate Professor level, the successful candidate will have evidence of excellence in: 1) scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications and recognition as an independent investigator with a track record of significant external grant funding; 2) teaching; and 3) service.

    Develop and/or maintain an active line of research that is consistent with the department’s existing research programs, preferably one that is, or has the potential to be, interdisciplinary in nature and eligible for extramural funding.

    Current DPT faculty’s research include: Fall risk investigations in healthy older adults, obese individuals and patients with neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and stroke, assessment of fall risk using inertial measurement units and machine learning based fall classification algorithms; studies in motor control and motor learning in pediatric and adult populations; the mechanisms and resolution of overuse injuries and interventions in various populations; telerehab, robotics and virtual reality rehabilitation in stroke survivors and other neurological populations; recovery of upper extremity function after neurological injury or disorders; neurophysiological mechanisms governing the control of optimal motor variability in Parkinson’s patients and other neurologic populations; adaptations in postural control of the trunk in response to musculoskeletal pain and aging, and the neuromechanical mechanisms underlying altered postural control, etc.

    Teach in area(s) of expertise in the DPT program. Teaching load is negotiable based on research excellence and extramural funding. Additional responsibilities include mentoring physical therapy students, participating in inter-professional educational experiences, and professional/academic service, including maintaining clinical competency, if applicable.

    Tenure track faculty are expected to develop and maintain an active research/creative works agenda for future tenure consideration and are evaluated on their research/creative works activity, teaching and service.

    For those at the Associate Professor level, significant service, including mentoring junior faculty, is expected.
