The research involves biomechanical assessment of a novel spinal surgery aimed at patients withlow back pain. Currently, the most common spinal surgery for patients with low back pain is afusion which involves rigid fixation of vertebra. Unfortunately, fusion surgery can lead to adjacentsegment disease that can put the patient into more pain and discomfort. This provides anopportunity for novel surgical approaches, such as nucleus replacements (partial replacement ofthe intervertebral disc) to be developed. The aim of this PhD is to assess the biomechanicalbehaviour of the IVD following nucleus replacement surgery using both conventional, and novelapproaches. The project will involve experimental assessment of the different surgicalapproaches, and investigate the effect the surgery has on the normal function of the intervertebraldisc.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements forenrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College London. You will have a 2:1 degree or higher inmechanical engineering or a related subject, and an enquiring and rigorous approach to researchtogether with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. An interest in medical devices, goodteam-working, and observational and communication skills are essential.
