ICORD is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of Physical Therapy or Kinesiology. The successful candidate will work with a collaboration of Dr. Jaimie Borisoff, Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering Design, and Drs. Tania Lam (UBC Kinesiology) and Chris West (UBC Cell and Physiological Sciences).
The work will be primarily be on our AAPLEwalk adapted exercise machine for people with disabilities. Active Arm Passive Leg Exercise (AAPLE) is a modality whereby active arm-driven exercise is synchronized with passive leg movements. AAPLEwalk takes this a step further and aims to combine the benefits of exercise, standing, and gait training in a single machine to provide people with lower limb disabilities independent access to cardiovascular fitness and potential health benefits associated with locomotor (walking) responses. With AAPLEwalk the user is supported while weight bearing on an elliptical-type exercise machine, allowing user-generated walking-like patterns through arm-driven exercise at variable intensities appropriate for cardiovascular fitness gains. Thus, the comprehensive goal of providing challenging cardiovascular exercise along with standing locomotor movements, which should help mitigate secondary complications, is realized in one machine.
The successful candidate will work with the AAPLEwalk design team and study the short-term health benefits of this modality of exercise (e.g. acute cardiovascular and locomotor effects). Additional research is expected into other adapted exercise modalities, issues associated with standing and spinal cord injury, and the benefits of exercise with epidural or transcutaneous electrical stimulation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A PhD degree in an area suitable for the work to be performed, e.g. Physical Therapy or Kinesiology.
- Experience with at least one or more of the following: cardiopulmonary exercise testing, EMG, 3d motion capture systems
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Experience with working with people with spinal cord injury is an asset
- Experience working with MATLAB and statistical software is an asset
