The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking outstanding candidates for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor in the area of Autonomous Vehicle Safety. The faculty member is expected to join the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) research group and is expected to collaborate with the Link Lab, The Center for Transportation Studies, and other researchers from MAE, SEAS and the School of Medicine.
UVA is a global leader in human performance and injury research for sports, military, medical, and automobile safety applications with world-class computational, experimental, mechanical, and biological resources. The successful applicant should expand the scope of UVA research in occupant protection for the next generation of advanced and autonomous vehicles. Specific research thrusts of a candidate in the areas of active, passive, and integrated safety may include, but are not limited to, the following aspects associated with autonomous vehicles:
The faculty member will be expected to develop a strong research team, establish an energetic and well-funded research program, engage in teaching and training of graduate and undergraduate students, and collaborate with CAB's other researchers in advancing the field of automobile safety and with LinkLab in the field on autonomous systems.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, a record of excellence in research, a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a dedication to service in both the research community and the university.
While the faculty member will be primary in MAE, the position may entail joint or secondary appointments within SEAS and/or with other schools at UVA as appropriate for research interests. Rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications and experience.
