The Computational Biosciences Laboratory at Boise State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to pursue a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering. Preferred start date is August 2019 or January 2020. This is a fully-funded assistantship which covers tuition, health insurance, and a competitive stipend. Applicants should have strong interest in computational modeling and biological systems. The PhD student will develop a multifactorial finite element model of osteoarthritis initiation and progression in the knee joint. The objective of the project is to develop data-driven computational models to quantify interactions between mechanical, structural, and biological factors affecting osteoarthritis. The student will also work with the Biomolecular Research Center at Boise State to obtain imaging and composition data of articular cartilage to inform model development.
Ideal qualifications for this PhD assistantship include:
* MS degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering or computer science or BS degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering or computer science with prior research experience
* Knowledge of finite element analysis and proficiency with commercial FE codes
* Knowledge of knee biomechanics
* Knowledge of musculoskeletal modeling/simulation tools/techniques
* Experience with confocal imaging / biological testing
* Excellent problem-solving skills
* Proficiency with programming languages
* Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills
The Computational Biosciences Laboratory collaborates with research groups in biological sciences, mechanical engineering, and kinesiology, and the successful applicant should expect to develop an interdisciplinary skillset over the course of their doctoral studies.
Located on the Boise River in southwestern Idaho and situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Boise State University is the largest institution in Idaho with a student enrollment of 24,000. The University consists of six colleges, five schools and approximately 2,700 faculty and staff and has a rapidly expanding research profile. Boise State University is located in the capital city with a regional population of over 652,000. With a thriving arts scene and abundant outdoor opportunities, Boise has been recognized as one of America’s best places to live and work. The moderate climate contributes to an outstanding quality of life with recreational opportunities nearby that include alpine skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, camping, hiking and biking.
