  • The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, is seeking applicants for a Mechanical Engineering Technician position at the Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB).Responsibilities will include managing, supervising, and assisting with various research projects related to injury biomechanics. This will include project planning, execution, data analysis, and report preparation. This will also include supervising mechanical and biomedical engineering graduate students to various degrees, from educating new graduate students on experimental techniques to supporting senior graduate students in executing projects for which they are responsible. The candidate will also have an active role in the design and execution of the experiments involving cadaveric materials.
    Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent with four years of experience, is required. A Bachelors degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
    • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, with a focus on biomechanics is preferred.
    • Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years experience with each of the following (may include experience during graduate work):
      • Designing and performing biomechanics experiments involving the use of motion capture systems
      • Programming and customized data analysis with scientific programing languages such as Matlab

    • Preferred applicants will have experience in solid mechanics (including finite element analysis), data acquisition systems, kinematic analyses using rigid body motion transformation, device design using CAD software (e.g., Solidworks) and will have a working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
    • Demonstrated record in preparing project reports, and assisting in the writing of scientific papers is preferred.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.

    This is a one-year term position with the potential for extension based on work performance, availability of projects, and funding.
