  • PhD position—Patient-specific Cardiovascular Biomechanics and Virtual Reality

    The Cardiovascular Biomechanics Lab at Northern Arizona University (NAU) has an open PhD position in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to start immediately or in Spring/Fall 2020. The position is fully-funded including tuition, health insurance, and a competitive stipend.

    The PhD student can be part of the Bioengineering or Mechanical Engineering PhD programs at NAU. The student will perform patient-specific CFD simulations of blood flow in cardiovascular disease. The student will also perform continuum and discrete mass transport modeling (continuum convective transport and Lagrangian particle tracking). Finally, the student will work with NAU’s Interactive and Immersive Virtual Reality Lab to develop interactive virtual reality simulations of blood flow and particle transport.

    Required qualifications:
    • A BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field.
    • Strong background in numerical analysis and computational mechanics.
    • Strong experience in computer programming (Python, Matlab, or C/C++).
    • Self-motivation, discipline, and the desire to work in a collaborative environment and publish high-quality papers and actively present at annual conferences.
    • Very minimum NAU requirements for admission: GPA higher than 3.0, GRE writing higher than 3.0, TOEFL higher than 80 (90 for funding) or IELTS higher than 6.5 (7.0 for funding).


    Preferred qualifications:
    • Experience in Python programming
    • Familiarity with the finite element method (FEM) theory.
    • Demonstrated success in research (papers, etc.).
    • Experience with open-source computational mechanics software (e.g. FEniCS or OpenFOAM) and data-processing (e.g visualization toolkit--VTK ) will be a plus.
