Research Fellow in Mechanical design for the Fit for Purpose, Affordable Body-Powered

The School of Energy and Electronic Engineering at the University of Portsmouth is looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on the Fit for Purpose, Affordable Body-Powered Prostheses project. This project is looking at novel designs of prosthetic mechanisms that are appropriate for production and use in Low and Middle Income Countries. This is a an opportunity to work on an exciting biomedical engineering project and implement your findings with experts in Uganda and Jordan, with direct benefits to people with limb loss.
Join an interdisciplinary research team of biomedical engineers, prosthetists, healthcare psychologists and social scientists working on designs of prosthetic arms in Lower and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). They will work primarily with Professor Peter Kyberd in Portsmouth and Professors Laurence Kenney and David Howard from the University of Salford.
This is a collaboration between the Universities of Portsmouth, Salford, University College London under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), and includes partners in Uganda and Jordan. https://www.fit4purposeprosthetics.org/
The candidate will need to be able to design, manufacture, and manage the production of mechanical hands. The means of actuation of the hand will be mechanical, and could hydraulic, so knowledge and experience of micro hydraulics is an advantage. The role requires a PhD (or equivalent work experience). The post is fixed term two years from the date of appointment.
The candidate needs to be highly organised with a demonstrable ability for delivering projects and tasks on time and to a high standard. They will need a passion for solving problems, and developing solutions that have the potential to make positive contributions to society.
This is an opportunity for a highly motivated researcher to become involved in an project that will make valuable contributions to the University’s research agenda.
