    Job summary
    ADVANCE (ArmeD SerVices TrAuma RehabilitatioN OutComE) is a complex prospective cohort study of the long-term medical and psychosocial outcomes of UK Armed Forces personnel seriously injured in Afghanistan (https://www.advancestudydmrc.org.uk/ https://www.advancestudydmrc.org.uk/). 1200 men are being recruited and will be followed regularly for at least 20 years. This unique study is of global importance to military and civilian casualties who have suffered serious physical trauma. The baseline measures on these 1200 men are being completed over the coming months and this provides a wealth of data on musculoskeletal health that the postholder will access and harness in order to provide answers to biomechanical and clinical musculoskeletal health questions. This exciting opportunity is for a musculoskeletal biomechanics researcher with an interest in making a real difference to those who have suffered some of the most severe musculoskeletal injuries imaginable, including amputations. The post will be based in the rapidly growing research group part of the Musculoskeletal Medical Engineering Centre https://www.imperial.ac.uk/msk and the Centre for Blast Injury Studies http://www.imperial.ac.uk/cbis. Within the last year our research group has been awarded numerous grants and our ambition is to continue growing by appointing researchers who will be invested in this work and are aiming to become academic leaders in the field. Currently we are recruiting up to six researchers to work on various musculoskeletal projects ranging from the development of affordable prosthetic and orthotic devices, and orthopaedic tools as well as the analysis of data from clinics in low-to-middle income countries, musculoskeletal modelling for amputees and other positions (links can be found in the related jobs section).     Duties and responsibilities
    The postholder will have the experience and capacity to act as a role model in a research environment as well as a track record in technical knowledge of musculoskeletal biomechanics and good knowledge of medical statistics.     Essential requirements
    The ideal candidate will have: Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals
    Experience of conducting research using medical imaging
    Experience of conducting research using medical imaging
    Experience of conducting research in biomechanicsExperience of working in multidisciplinary environment (with specific groups of people, e.g. sponsors, patients, healthcare professionals, the military etc.)
    Experience of assisting in scoping new projects and setting research priorities
    Knowledge of project management
    Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
    Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
    Creative approach to problem-solving
    Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people
    Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication
    Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision
    Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines
    Advanced computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets and the Internet
    Ability to direct the work of a small research team and motivate others to produce a high standard of work
    Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
    Flexible attitude towards work
    Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times
    Willingness to undertake any necessary training for the role


    Further information
    This is a fixed term position for 18 months.
    Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £34,397 - £37,486 per annum.
