Job Summary:
The Research Engineer position in SMU’s Locomotor Performance Laboratory of the Departmentof Applied Physiology & Wellness supports research, facility and laboratory functions by establishing, maintaining and utilizing data acquisition systemsand coordinating as necessary with SMU facility and Campus planningdepartments. Duties include overseeingdata acquisition needs, operations and maintenance, equipment set-up,calibration, signal processing, data reduction, analysis, manuscript and grantpreparation, recruiting and testing human research subjects. This position provides critical research support for all aspects of laboratory operations and the research process.
Essential Functions:
Establishing and maintaining data acquisition systems.
Experimentation and operating data acquisition systems.
Data reduction and analysis.
Manuscript and grant preparation.
Student supervision, laboratory support and instruction.
Facility logistics, maintenance and design
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree is required. Doctoral degree is preferred.
Field of study in Biomechanics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering or related field is required.
Three or more years of engineering and/or technical scientific experience in a university orcorporate research setting is required.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word is required. Proficiency with Matlab, LabView is also required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively work with a wide range of constituencies and diverse audiences.
Must have strong interpersonalskills and the ability to provide effective student supervision, lab support and instruction.
Candidate must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning, prioritization, time management, and the ability to work well under deadlines.
Candidate must have excellent project management and multi-tasking skills.
Must have excellent analytical skills, able to collect and analyze data, reach conclusions and prepare manuscripts and grants.
Candidate must have strong problem solving skills and able to problem solve in all phases of the research process, including equipment set-up and troubleshooting.
Must be self-directed and able to function independently.
