Research Engineer, Applied Sport Science, University of Washington

The Possibility Research (PR) Laboratory at The University of Washington seeks a qualified part-time research engineer to help run day-to-day activities in sports performance and injury-related studies and assist with laboratory management tasks as specified. The successful candidate will work primarily in the Amplify Movement and Performance Laboratory (where the PR Lab is housed), a state-of-the-art laboratory comprised of an interdisciplinary research staff of biomechanists, engineers, and clinical researchers and specializing in human movement analysis and performance optimization.

Responsibilities:
  • Collect data for a variety of human movement analysis studies, using IMU motion analysis systems, instrumented treadmill, insole force and pressure sensors, force platforms, high-speed cameras, wireless EMG, timing gates, and dynamometers. Collection may also include breath-by-breath metabolic gas analyzers and optical or traditional lactate meters
  • Develop novel algorithms and filters that transform data from inertial sensors to quantitative metrics of human movement and performance. Examples of movements to be analyzed include running, sprinting, jumping, hitting, pitching, and rowing
  • Data processing, including development of processing and analysis pipelines using Matlab
  • Administrative responsibilities related to clinical or sport-related projects, including responding to inquiries, scheduling participants, database management, supporting assessment staff, data collection, and report generation
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and documentation, and order supplies
  • Contribute to reports and publications, as needed
  • Train laboratory staff in equipment, laboratory policies, and data analysis pipelines, and supervise student research assistants

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Kinesiology, or related discipline (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Detail oriented and self-motivated with capacity to manage and coordinate several study-related tasks concurrently
  • Demonstrated proficiency in biomechanics instrumentation, data collections, and research principles
  • Position involves close interaction with faculty, staff, clinicians, and graduate/undergraduate students; successful candidates should have strong interpersonal and communication skills and willingness to work on a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Fluency in Matlab (additional expertise in R, Python, SQL, or other programming languages preferred)
  • Applicants with prior industry experience will be given preference.
