The Seattle Institute for Biomedical and Clinical Research (SIBCR) and the Center for Limb Loss and MoBility (CLiMB) at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA have an opening for a research/software engineer in the field of image processing and analysis. This position is available immediately and will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found. The successful candidate will be primarily involved in a research project whose goals are to evaluate plantar pressures in transmetatarsal amputees, and to design new prosthetic aids to alleviate high pressures. The candidate would support the imaging analysis and algorithm development aspect of this project. Secondary roles include developing additional analysis algorithms to mesh with existing in-house software and developing stand-alone support software for several bone/shape-based applications.

This position uniquely includes opportunities for career growth for candidates who fulfill the core programming background requirements even in the absence of any prior biomechanics or medical research experience, though applicants with biomechanics or medical research experience are also encouraged to apply. This position also offers opportunities (5-10% effort) for the successful candidate to have hands on involvement in device design & fabrication, human-subjects research and new project formulation as desired, for variety.
Responsibilities: 1) Developing/designing new algorithms for visualizing 3D data and assisting with data analysis and reporting. 2) Developing/designing stand-alone UI friendly tools to assist in image measurement in clinical research. 3) Assisting in redeveloping/optimizing existing analysis software built in Matlab/CUDA. 4) Working with users to understand design requirements and incorporate user feedback into design revisions.
Requirements: The successful candidate will have:
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent command over Matlab or Python, and C or C++
- Strong competency in version control (GitHub or similar)
- Strong competency in fundamental image techniques such as:
- Image processing (convolution, dilation, etc…)
- Shape analysis (statistical, principal component or Procrustes)
- Image manipulation in 3D environments
- Excellent independence and self-sufficiency (candidate will become the subject matter expert on various facets of these projects)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- A bachelors degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline, with at least 2 years of work history
Additional qualifications desired but not required:
- A Graduate degree in a relevant engineering or computer science discipline
- UI development experience
- Medical imaging experience
The annual salary range for this full-time position is approximately $65,000 – $80,000 depending on qualifications, with benefits. Please note that this position is only open to U.S. citizens.
