    Research Assistant/ Research Fellow - 2 year fixed term position, with potential for extension for a further 2 years

    Recent advances in computer aided engineering and additive manufacturing are transforming the treatment of bone and joint diseases through the development of personalised implants and surgeries. This position will help to develop knowledge and technology required for rigorous development and evaluation of pre-clinical test methods, personalised devices for the orthopaedic and maxillofacial industry and decision support tools. The research fellow will be engaged in a range of projects to further develop the virtual assessment of primary and revision joint replacement, as well as fracture fixation and oncology devices. This will span from developing pre-clinical assessment methods to simulation enhanced clinical trials through to decision support applications for surgical planning. The position is part of the ARC Training Centre in Medical Implant Technologies (ARC CMIT), in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and Griffith University. The ARC CMIT brings together world-leading biomedical engineers, scientists, and clinicians and connects these experts with medical implant global supply chain providers from Australia, China, Belgium, UK and the US. The goal of the ARC CMIT is to support research translation which leads to the development of best industry and clinical practice, new products, processes and solutions. The research fellow will play a key role in supporting the 5 PhD projects within Flinders and liaising with the academic and industrial partners.

    The Research Fellow is accountable for:
    • Participate in the ARC CMIT project, to develop advanced computational methods to assess/predict the performance of orthopaedic devices;
    • Independently plan and carry out research on the nominated research project and work towards completion of the aims of the project;
    • Collaborate and support the PhD students associated with the project;
    • Colloborate with the partner academic, clinical and industrial institutions;
    • Present the research at national and international conferences;
    • Publish the research outcomes in international peer reviewed journals;
    • Contribute to research at a national and international level that has a direct impact on the research productivity and reputation of the university;
    • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of posiiton as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University;

    Key position capabilities:
    A PhD in orthopaedic biomechanics or in a relevant area of computational biomechanics;
    Significant experience in the development and application of finite element analysis, or related methods, in orthopaedic biomechanics or a related area;
    Experience of musculoskeletal modelling and integration with finite element analysis;
    Experience of design of experiments, stochastic modelling techniques, probabilistic analyses or related techniques;
    Programming skills, particularly Matlab and/or Python;
    Demonstrated ability to contribute at a national level in research in orthopaedic biomechanics;
    A record of quality research in computational biomechanics as evidenced by research publications in leading conferences and journals commensurate with opportunity;
    Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with external academic and industrial partners;
    Excellent ability to analyse data, problem solve and maintain accurate research records;
    Demonstrated capacity to communicate research concepts to technical and non-technical audiences;
    Demonstrated project management skills, including high level organisational and time management skills, ability to manage competing priorities and excellent record keeping skills;
    Demonstrated experience in using initiative, working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines

    PhD scholarships
    In addition to the above position, we are also seeking to fill 4 fully funded PhD positions covering a range of projects which include:
    - Computational pre-clinical testing of fracture fixation plates
    - Influence of patient and surgical variability on bone remodelling of the proximal tibia after total knee replacement (clinical based study)
    - Development of surrogate modelling for the application of near real time prediction of implant performance
    - Application of statistical shape models for image reconstruction
