    Position Summary:

    The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UTHealth, the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston is seeking a full-time Senior Research Engineer to support human and animal research studies within the department’s Biomotion Laboratory. The lab is equipped with a 12-camera Qualysis motion capture system, a Bertec stpli-belt instrumented treadmill with instrumented handrails, Bertec instrumented stairs, and a state-of-the-art bi-plane fluoroscopy system, along with access to a 32-channel Cometa EMG system. The successful candidate will support ongoing and new research projects by working directly with departmental and external principal investigators and other designated study personnel. The Research Engineer will be responsible for carrying out experimental movement studies that involve data collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation along with report generation. Data processing and analysis will require Matlab programming as well as the use of software such as Visual3D. This position offers the qualified candidate a unique opportunity to become specialized in a wide range of human and animal movement measurement modalities.

    Position Key Accountabilities:


    Collect movement data using motion capture, electromyography, force plates, fluoroscopy, and other analog or digital devices as needed.
    Use data analysis and processing software such as Matlab, Qualysis, C-Motion Visual3D, and C-Motion DSX to provide data for interpretation, publication, and presentation of findings.
    Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and schedule laboratory test sessions for multiple on-going projects.
    Document and monitor research protocols and study progress.
    Maintain confidential storage of patient and clinical research data.


    Skills:


    Computer programming experience in Matlab.
    Ability to assist/lift patients weighing up to 200 lbs. (with assistance) to and from starting locations.
    Ability to move equipment and materials as needed.
    Ability to communicate effectively with patients, laboratory staff, physicians, and research investigators.

    Education:

    Bachelor of Science in kinesiology, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related scientific field from an accredited college or university along with a background in biomechanics is strongly preferred.
    Master of Science from an accredited college or university with a background in biomechanics is preferred.

    Experience:

    Must have a minimum of four years of related research experience in the field of human movement measurement and analysis. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.
    Experience working with children and adults with neuromuscular disabilities is highly desired.
    Previous experience collecting, processing, analyzing, and interpreting kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic data collection is highly desired.

    Ability to interact with scientists and researcher from other disciplines is crucial.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.


    Physical Requirements:
    Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
