The Ag-MEQ laboratory seeks to hire a postdoctoral fellow with biomechanical engineering skills that can be applied to analyze complex biological systems. We seek engineers who are good at communicating across disciplines, and who see themselves thriving in a highly collaborative environment. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading scientist and researchers as part of a 6 million-dollar NSF research award. Current research projects within Ag-MEQ laboratory are numerous and diverse and include both theoretical and empirical studies in engineering biomechanics and interdisciplinary design. Past projects include nonlinear finite element studies, biomaterial characterization, sensor development, design of agricultural machinery and development of experimental prototypes for agronomist and plant scientist. Previous projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation, The United States Department of Agriculture, NASA and corporate partners.
Minimum Qualifications
• PhD in mechanical, biological or agricultural engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
• Record of accomplishment that demonstrates oral and written communication skills
• Experience in product development, design and robotics
Preferred Qualifications
• Experienced with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Pic32, pcb design
• Experienced in MATLAB code development
• Background in biomechanics / advanced solid mechanics / large deflection analysis
• Experienced in nonlinear finite element analysis
• DIY attitude with prior making and product development experience
• Proven ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students

The successful applicant will serve as a postdoctoral scholar working full time under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Robertson in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He or she will be responsible for mentoring several undergraduate and graduate M.S. student projects. In addition, the fellow will also be responsible for creating high quality publications and conducting research in the area of plant biomechanics, agricultural engineering and robotics. Experience in product development, compliant mechanism design, large deflection analysis and advanced solid mechanics is desired. The fellow will be expected to develop several portable electro-mechanical systems to measure physical properties of field grown plants (e.g., wheat, rice maize etc.). In general, these responsibilities are to be carried out throughout the semesters of the appointment, including times when classes are not in session, but not including days when the University is closed.
