Why choose between doing meaningful work and having a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can have both. That's because MITRE people are committed to tackling our nation's toughest challenges—and we're committed to the long-term well-being of our employees. MITRE is different from most technology companies. We are a not-for-profit corporation chartered to work for the public interest, with no commercial conflicts to influence what we do. The Research & Development centers we operate for the government create lasting impact in fields as diverse as cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, and enterprise transformation. We're making a difference every day—working for a safer, healthier, and more secure nation and world.

    Job Description:

MITRE's Emerging Technologies Department seeks two biomedical engineers (or related discipline) with expertise in physiologic monitoring, biomechanical analysis, and/or performance evaluation to support several initiatives for enhancing performance, preventing and mitigating injuries, and assessing the functional implications of those injuries. In this position, you will use your expertise for technical evaluations and to provide strategic guidance to assist MITRE’s Government sponsors in creating a safer world.

Qualified candidates will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in biomedical engineering, systems engineering, computational imaging and sensing, neuroscience, computer science, and computational modeling who deliver actionable guidance to Government via in-depth evaluation of the state-of-the-art, laboratory and field experiments, and extensive data analyses.

    Key Functions:

Depending on the qualification of the candidate, it is expected they will be responsible for selected functions in these positions, including:
    • Assessing implications of emerging trends and advancements in the field of human biomechanics and/or human performance monitoring
    • Designing and managing laboratory and non-laboratory experiments to extract information on human performance
    • Leveraging existing biomechanical models and performing evaluations
    • Developing and providing strategic guidance to Government sponsors
    • Analyzing data and developing/extracting meaningful analytics and metrics
    • Providing subject matter expertise to inform Government programs
    • Contributing to multidisciplinary teams and engage with United States Government representatives to guide key decisions and recommendations to improve human health and performance
    • Presenting technical material in an accessible manner to non-subject matter experts and key Government decision makers

    Required Qualifications:
    • Hands on experience in biomedical research design and execution
    • Expertise in basic and/or applied science and computer programming (Matlab, Java, C++, Python, or other language)
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present technical matters in an accessible manner across disciplines and to individuals with a broad range of technical expertise
    • Masters or Ph.D. in a biomedical or related engineering field

    Preferred Qualifications:
Highly qualified candidates would meet several of the following preferred qualifications. However, we do not expect any individual to meet all of these and are looking to fill multiple positions according to technical expertise.

    Human performance
    • Experience monitoring human performance via standard tools (e.g., motion capture, inertial measurement sensors, pressure sensors, accelerometry, optical, etc.) and extracting relevant metrics
    • Experience with physiologic monitoring (e.g., EKG, EMG, EOG) data collection and analysis
    • Experience leveraging findings from human performance and/or physiologic monitoring to inform clinical and/or workplace decisions
    • Experience applying novel techniques to develop analytics and metrics to describe and predict performance
    • Experience evaluating hardware systems for accuracy and reliability
    • Experience designing and developing new hardware and software systems for biomedical data collection
    • PhD in biomedical or related engineering field

    Biomechanics

    • Experience in injury and neuromuscular biomechanics
    • Experience evaluating the effect of high rate loading conditions associated with military type hazards
    • Experience in computational modeling and simulation of the human (e.g., Finite element and/or multi-body dynamics)
    • Expertise in multi-scale modeling and simulation
    • Experience using combining data types (e.g., kinematics, EMG) to evaluate performance and extract relevant metrics
    • Experience in design and execution of experiments in non-laboratory environments
    • Experience with biostatistics and machine learning techniques
    • PhD in biomedical or related engineering field
