    Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering

Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering & Science
    Stevens Institute of Technology
    Hoboken, New Jersey 07030

    Position Summary
Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) seeks nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The Chair will report to the Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr., School of Engineering & Science (SES), the largest school at Stevens. The Chair will work closely with Stevens leadership as the Institute continues to increase its impact and to fulfill its vision of being a world-class, student-centric research university. A strong track record of successful clinical collaborations that could assist in strengthening relationships with neighboring medical centers in the NYC area is highly desired.

    Department of Biomedical Engineering
Founded in 2003 initially as an academic program, Biomedical Engineering has grown to be one of the nine vibrant departments in SES. BME is a key player in one of the six foundational pillars in Stevens’ 10-year Strategic Plan and is poised for significant expansion to create an increasingly dynamic environment for cutting-edge translational research through institutional investment. The newly constructed Gateway Academic Center, that will also house a state-of-the-art tissue engineering research laboratory, is a recent example. BME offers a broad range of programs at all levels - an ABET-accredited undergraduate program, two Master’s programs, and a doctoral program - with a total of approximately 250 students. A distinctive of Stevens BME education is problem-based, hands-on learning and fostering development of an entrepreneurial mindset. Federally and privately funded research focus areas include rehabilitation engineering, neural engineering, pulmonary biomechanics, and tissue engineering with opportunities to partner across departments in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative campus environment. Our location affords additional opportunities to collaborate with the world’s brightest minds in medicine.

    Qualifications
Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline and have an exemplary record of scholarly activities. Commitment to and knowledge of affirmative action, equal employment opportunity, and diversity are required. The successful candidate must have a balanced perspective on research and teaching, as well as the creativity and ability to lead a faculty representing a diversified range of interests. In addition, experience is required cutting-cross academic administration, research, and graduate and undergraduate teaching.

    Stevens Institute of Technology
