The Department of Surgical Research at Anne Arundel Medical Center is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to apply human factors techniques to studies in surgical ergonomics and Operating Room optimization in the healthcare environment. Current protocols include analyzing operating room workflow to improve patient outcomes; improving the delivery of endoscopic, minimally invasive and robotic surgery via simulation-based research; and developing surgical-field image-augmentation systems using image analytic techniques.
It is expected that this individual will gradually split their time between supporting the ongoing funded research of their direct supervisor, and developing and conducting their own independent scholarly research. In both cases, the individual will work in a highly collaborative environment and have available the strength from the entire team to support their research.
Applicants must be highly motivated individuals capable of working both independently and on various team projects in a fast paced active hospital research environment. Incumbent must possess excellent communication and organizational skills. Applicants for this position must be data-driven, detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to help move the research program forward.
This position is a two-three year term with high likelihood of extension for high performing candidates. This position will report scientifically to the Director of Surgical Research and the Chair of Surgery.
The position is based in the James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning (SAIL) Center, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. SAIL is a unique facility dedicated to the advancement and practice of medicine through research, training and innovation designed to improve surgical and medical procedures and outcomes for patients.

- Employ human factors and/or cognitive science methods which may include eye tracking, cognitive modeling, and observational data collection methods, as well as skills in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.
- Representing human factors on a variety of clinical and administrative teams.
- Utilize human factors methods for improving health IT user adoption.
- Work with performance improvement, risk management and patient safety teams on project development and data analysis.
- Use data analytics expertise to leverage large data sets of electronic health record data and patient safety event data.
- Perform data collection/processing, data statistical analyses, including selecting the appropriate analysis procedure.
- Use statistical knowledge to analyze these quantitative and qualitative data.
- Present research results to internal and external parties.
- Effectively disseminate research results via journal publications and presentations.
- Other relevant duties, as assigned.
Educational/Experience Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics or a related field.
- Previous experience in Healthcare is preferred, but is not required.
- Experience with data analytics and research methods is desired.
