The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME) at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY is the Nation’s first department of engineering, tracing its lineage from West Point’s founding in 1802. West Point aspires to be the preeminent leader development institution in the world. The CME Department supports the Academy’s efforts through the education and development of world-class engineers within its highly ranked, 4-year ABET-accredited programs.
The CME Department is seeking highly competitive candidates for several faculty positions during the 2020 calendar year. This announcement is intended to provide an early look and broad advertisement for faculty positions within the Department. The engineering faculty at the United States Military Academy focus on outstanding teaching, project-based learning, senior capstone design projects, and defense-related research. The Mechanical Engineering program is considering applications for prospective faculty in Mechanical and Biomechanical Engineering in order to increase capacity and begin a collaborative research project on military performance.
Experience in biomechanical research is desired. Preferred specialties and experience include:
As an Assistant Professor / Instructor / Researcher in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering you will be responsible for leading a research collaboration between West Point and U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center. There may also be opportunities to teach undergraduate engineering courses and advising student design and research projects. Duties may include teaching, course development, faculty development, cadet development, institutional service as well as advising cadet capstone design and independent research projects.
To be qualified for this position, an individual should have completed a PhD or Masters degree in a relevant field of engineering by June 2020. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelors Degree and relevant biomechanics experience may be considered. PhD and Masters candidates may have the opportunity to teach and be hired at or promoted to Assistant Professor.
US Citizenship is required for this position due to the nature of the research. Superior communication skills and dedication to excellence in teaching are absolute requirements of this position.
The ability to do research in support of the externally funded project is essential. Faculty within the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department at West Point have the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues within the Center for Innovation in Engineering, the Academy’s premier research team. Individuals who are interested in developing research related to national defense applications are strongly encouraged to apply.
