    PhD Scholarships to study muscle mechanics /energetics at The University of Queensland

    We are excited to call for applications for full PhD scholarships to work on a number of projects associated with Australian Research Council (ARC) funded projects, working in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at The University of Queensland. The University of Queensland PhD Scholarship covers an annual stipend (tax free, indexed annually) for a period of up to 3.5 years of full-time study and a tuition fee waiver. Projects will be aligned with a program of research that includes both local and international collaborations including the following researchers: Assoc Prof Glen Lichtwark (UQ), Prof Paul Hodges (UQ), Assoc Prof Bradley Launikonis (UQ), Prof Scott Delp (Stanford), Assoc Prof Greg Sawicki (Georgia Tech) and Prof Andrew Taberner (U of Auckland).

    Current projects range from exploring the energetic cost of muscle contractions to quantifying the deformation of complex human muscles during contraction. We use state-of-the-art instruments to undertake both isolated muscle preparation experiments (e.g. assessing the thermodynamics of muscle contraction) to working with human muscle in vivo (e.g. microendoscopy for examining sarcomere length or ultrasound imaging to assess muscle mechanics). The research is integrated within a program of research aimed at better understanding how muscle design both enhances and limits human performance.

    These projects would suit students with a strong background in muscle physiology, biomechanics or biophysics or from any of the following fields - biomedical science, physiology, bio/mechanical engineering, exercise science (kinesiology), comparative biology or anatomy. Strong programming or computational skills would be highly desirable.
