This post presents an exciting opportunity for a highly-motivated engineer or physical scientist to use their technical skills in a clinical setting, working closely with patients and clinicians of several disciplines. The project involves developing and analysing biomechanical musculoskeletal models of children’s walking patterns in order to understand why children with cerebral palsy often develop foot deformities. The project involves data collection, working with children in the laboratory, and computer modelling. We are interested in finding someone with excellent technical and numerical skills and training will be provided in the specialist analysis techniques required. The work is funded by Action Medical Research.
The successful applicant will join the School of Pharmacy and Bioengineering at Keele University, working from ORLAU at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH). The project is being carried out in collaboration with colleagues at Imperial College (London), Oxford University and the University of Aberdeen.
ORLAU is a specialist department of the RJAH hospital (http://www.rjah.nhs.uk/orlau) based in Oswestry, Shropshire. The department employs over 30 clinical, technical and administrative staff and runs busy clinics in movement analysis and rehabilitation engineering, alongside conducting a programme of research and education. ORLAU has a large gait laboratory, clinic rooms and a well-equipped workshop.
