The Fiber Optics Laser and Integrated photonics Research (FLAIR) Lab at Boise State University is seeking a highly motivated individual to pursue a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering. Preferred start date is August 2019 or January 2020. This is a fully-funded assistantship which covers tuition, health insurance, and a competitive stipend. Applicants should have strong interest in biological systems and optics. Biomedical graduate student’s thesis will be focused on creating thermal optical tools to study impacts in foot and leg bones, tissue, and ligaments. The thesis will include the effects of impact from a fast-moving projectile such as a hockey puck and study how much protection to the impact foot coverage can provide. The thermal tools being developed will be infrared thermography and modulated photothermal conductivity. The later will be used to study the modification in a body’s conductance, due to bone damage or a ligament tear. The developed tool will be used to quantify bone and soft tissue damage via other causes. The student will work under Dr. Kandadai (Electrical Engineering) and Dr. Brown (Kinesiology) and will be consulting with Dr. Fitzpatrick (Mechanical & Biomedical Engineering) for their thesis.
Ideal qualifications for this PhD assistantship include:
* MS degree in physics, or electrical, or mechanical or biomedical engineering or BS degree in physics or electrical or mechanical or biomedical engineering with a background in one of the following
* Electromagnetics
* Optical imaging,
* Biological systems
*Laser spectroscopy
*Modelling skills in Python and or Lab View.
and with a strong skills in :
* Excellent problem-solving skills
* Proficiency with programming languages
* Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills
The FLAIR lab collaborates with research groups in biological sciences, electrical engineering, and kinesiology, and the successful applicant should expect to develop an interdisciplinary skillset over the course of their doctoral studies.
